Anita and I received a large portion of the checks this week, and as we are processing them into our computer system, we once again realize that the majority of the checks are for nonmembers. Many of the bands that performed are entirely non-members, and many are mixed. The majority of the musicians in our Union who played the Fest are in violation! Let’s hope you will, too. What a tight sound! Monday nights the Station Inn is packed to capacity. They seem to be getting more popular every week!
Rogers Dyna-sonic Wood Shell Snare Drum White Marine Pearl 14×5
Never heard too many complaints about the potential of those shells to sound good. The snares themselves definately need changing as some of the strands are stretched and will give infinite “buzz” as they wont be sitting flush to the bottom head. Some head changes are in order and definately the snare cords. I think that the snare could be put back to life for a little over 50 bucks.
Heads usually run around bucks each and the snare wires are around

DW bass drum muffling pillows Recently, I realized my 22×18 DW performance kick sounded flat, dull and lifeless. The toms and snare got a lot of attention in the last year, 2 head replacements and regular re-tuning, but I always figured the kick sound was “that DW kick sound” and I should get used to it. Yesterday, I finally took the time to settle the matter. After a couple of tests, I left the factory-installed reso-side pillow velcroed to the bottom without it touching the head at all to act as an overtone magnet, and turned the batter side pillow so only its “tip” would barely touch the head.
Here is a link for a description: To my taste and in the environment in which I played yesterday, it was a game changer: I finally got a rich and full sound out of that kick. Feathering it produced a nice manly whisper, playing it fully-open gave me tone and at last left me in charge of managing volume and resonance. Of course I don’t play double kick anymore, and a blastbeat might have been harder to control.
So instead of a dull unidimensional kick, I now have a great drum which needs a bit of control but has so much to give in return. That kick is a well-crafted instrument, and trust me I am no DW worshipper, far from it.
Some of you will know the history of this snare drum, but if not, then here goes… The drum was launched in in both a wood and metal shell in varying depths, fitted with a unique snare frame often referred to as a snare cradle. The snare frame that held the snare wires evolved through various versions in an attempt to perfect the set up of the wires. The basic premise was to have a drum with floating snares which could be tensioned without putting any pressure on the head.
This would require the shell to have no snare beds, which were believed to reduce volume and tone and create choking. The very first metal Dynasonics were thin Gretsch shells, of which only about were made. There were no beads and seven etched lines in the centre of the shell.
Rogers Drums is an American drum manufacturer. It was founded in and originally based in Covington, Ohio. [ better source needed ] During the twentieth century their drums enjoyed popularity with musicians spanning from the dixieland jazz era in the s to classic rock in the s and s, but was particularly associated with Founded: in Farmingdale, New Jersey, United States.
The double bass is a standard member of the string section of the symphony orchestra and smaller string ensembles in Western classical music. A person who plays the double bass is usually referred to as a bassist. It is uncertain whether the instrument is a descendant of the viola da gamba or of the violin, but it is traditionally aligned with the violin family. While the double bass is nearly identical in construction to other violin family instruments, it also embodies features found in the older viol family.
Like many other string instruments, the double bass is played either with a bow arco or by plucking the strings pizzicato. In orchestral repertoire and tango music, both arco and pizzicato are employed. In jazz, pizzicato is the norm, except for some solos and also occasional written parts in modern jazz that call for bowing. In other genres, such as blues and rockabilly, the bass is plucked. When playing the double bass, the bassist either stands or sits on a high stool and leans the instrument against the bassist’s body with the bass turned slightly inwards in order to more easily reach the strings.
This stance is also a key reason for the bass’s sloped shoulders, which mark it apart from the other members of the violin family, as the narrower shoulders facilitate playing of the strings in their higher registers. The double bass is a transposing instrument and sounds one octave lower than notated. History The double bass is generally regarded as a modern descendant of the string family of instruments that originated in Europe in the 15th century, and as such has been described as a bass Violin.
In addition, while the violin has bulging shoulders, most double basses have shoulders carved with a more acute slope, like members of the viol family.

In the old days, I borrowed a Premier snare and it was lovely, and I think I have been looking for that sound ever since. I later tried to buy it off him, but he declined! The snares dominated the drum – from what I remember, it had a pair of 12 snare wires, and I think this is what gave it the sound, and the snare mechanism meant that you hardly had to touch it – it just sounded perfect. With modern snares, even stupidly expensive ones, I usually mess with them in the shop because they never seem to sound “right”.
Maybe I should just get a decent snare with a standard wide snare bed and put a suitable snare wire on it. Or maybe someone does? For a sonic difference that was not apparent enough to most people to make it worth the extra money and hassle. Bo Eder , If it’s the latter, Ludwig still makes the Super Sensitive strainer their snares. This is what I think of when you say “parallel action” because both sides are working in parallel with each other. I have seen some orchestral snare drums with up to three different types of snares going across the bottom and you could use them individually, or in combination, but they’re not parallel in operation.
Yes, that makes sense. I am not a snare drum designer but I suspect it sounded great to me because of the extra wires, and because they were widely spread over the drum.

Somewhere in Florida, behind a Rogers kit Your snare is from ’67 or so, as Dan stated above. I believe the 2 odd scripts were used as early as seen on drums until they ran out for a short while and when that new script logo was decided as the best design it was displayed and used proudly for the next 10yrs.. This odd scripts and end of eagle badge era for Rogers was a special time.
Not tops in the drum market just yet. But with the intro of Swivomatic hardware came logo changes as well. I would date the regular script to the year before the catalog in The first Dynas had the regular script logos. I have never seen a Dynasonic snare with one of the 2 odd scripts. The catalog also shows some odd script drum but I believe these were stock catalog pics that were used to show the line. The Holiday models were high in serial numbers because they were the most common being made at the time.
Spotlight or Classmate had lower numbers due to lesser production. Not sure where they started which model in serial number either. Like the Dynas start at

Lee Vinson Harry A. Bower is perhaps best known as having authored The Harry A. Bower’s methods were revolutionary at the time in that they treated the bells, xylophone, and timpani as equals alongside the snare drum. Previous drum methods focused almost exclusively on the military tradition of rudimental drumming with no attention paid to timpani or mallet percussion. Bower was an active performer in Boston at the turn of the 20th Century.

Dynasonic Lugs JLoveDrums94 , While taking it apart, I began to realize that the condition of this snare drums was far from perfect. Never mind the missing Dynasonic snare frame, the cracked batter-side hoop, the messed up wires, and the punctured resonant-side drumhead the shell is actually remarkably clean for a snare drum from the early 70s. The biggest problems that I began to discover, were the lugs.

Vintage Drum Guide Search our web sites! I get emails all of the time with a basic drum description and a serial number from visitors in hopes I can unlock the history of their drum. I think in general serial numbers do play an important role in the commercial market especially electronics and other high end items. In the 60’s Insurance companies made it mandatory that serial numbers be put on items so they can be documented.
Unfortunately drum companies never really prescribed to any code of documenting a drum based on that serial number. In fact I once heard that they started using serial numbers not for their own use per say but so schools and institutions could keep track of instruments in inventory. I also get people asking what factory a drum might have shipped from or the exact month a drum was made or even the production numbers etc.
The ever important serial number which some companies keep detailed records of unfortunately does not exist in the history of drums. We also have to state that much of the record keeping was archaic at best and in some cases history was destroyed in plant fires or just tossed in the garbage!. With that said many drum companies never even used serial numbers early on. In most cases the best way to estimate the date of a drum is its physical characteristics. Fortunately drum companies since the 40’s were good at printing catalogs.
