We are a specialist outpatient referral centre. We run clinics every morning by an appointment system. During these clinics, a variety of services are available including genetic counselling, detailed scanning and diagnostic procedures such as chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis. Tests in early pregnancy Early pregnancy and dating scan This early ultrasound scan provides important information about the number of babies present and the expected date of delivery. Pregnancy and the fetal heart can be seen from six weeks gestation by vaginal scan and from eight to nine weeks by abdominal scan. Accurate measurements and images are taken of the gestational sac and the ‘crown to rump’ length of the embryo, to accurately date the pregnancy. Down’s Syndrome Combined Test Serum blood screening in early pregnancy is performed alongside nuchal scanning in order to identify high-risk pregnancies. The test is performed at 11 – 13 weeks and if the results show an increased risk a diagnostic test, such as chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis is offered. Quadruple Test This test is offered to women who are more than 14 weeks pregnant at the time of the scan or in whom it has not been technically possible to obtain the measurements required for the Nuchal scan.

I had exactly the same hun. At 8 weeks I had spotting so had a very uick scan. Then at 9+4 had yet more blood. They scanned me, and dated me. I was then told I would not get my NHS 12 week scan as I have been dated, and essentially that is all the scan is for.
What if the scan shows a problem? What is an ultrasound scan? An ultrasound scan sends sound waves through your womb uterus. These waves bounce off your baby as echoes. Hard tissues, such as bone, reflect the most sound waves and so make the biggest echoes. These appear white in the image, and soft tissues appear grey. Fluids, such as the amniotic fluid surrounding your baby, appear black.

Will I be given a risk level for any other abnormalities? What is nuchal translucency? Nuchal translucency is a collection of fluid under the skin at the back of your baby’s neck. You will be offered two scans: You are welcome to bring someone with you when you come for your scan. Further scans are only arranged if there is a clinical need, either the doctor or midwife will explain if this should occur. The screening tests provide information about the chance of a baby with these conditions. These tests use blood samples taken from the mother and measurements taken from ultrasound scans, to work out this chance. The test you will be offered depends on how many weeks pregnant you are.
This will either be a combined screening test or a quadruple test. If you do receive a higher risk result from a screening test, your midwife or doctor will give you further information and support. There are two diagnostic tests available: It is important that you read this leaflet and discuss these screening tests with your midwife or obstetrician.

A pregnancy can be seen from as early as 6 weeks from the first day of your last period LMP and not the date of conception. If you have had any bleeding or pain or any other symptoms then this scan will accurately confirm viability. Sometimes it is requested by a doctor or midwife to confirm that your pregnancy is healthy in this case your scan is often called a viability scan and to calculate the date when your baby is due usually referred to as a dating scan.
It can also be performed to confirm the results of a pregnancy test or just to provide you with some reassurance that all is progressing as it should be.
